Why Owned Views in YouTube revenue reports exceed YouTube Studio

Updated 16/10/2026 · 7 min read · Injaz Digital team

The short answer

Owned Views in the revenue report exceed YouTube Studio because they include views of UGC videos on other people's channels and Track-policy views that earn nothing. The number grows further when lines from every file are summed, so the right views on a statement come only from lines with their own revenue, once per video, channel and asset.

Rights holders and network accountants ask: “Why are views in the revenue report higher than Studio?” and “Why does summing the Owned Views column give an unreal number?”. The answer lies in YouTube's own definition, and in summing mistakes most people make when they open the files in Excel.

What are Owned Views in YouTube reports?

Owned Views are all views of your content that count towards monetization or tracking. YouTube Help defines them as “all of your views that count towards Monetization or Track”, with the line's policy field deciding which. So the number includes views that never earn.

YouTube Help also says performance reports count only claimed views, while YouTube Analytics counts unclaimed partner-uploaded views as well as claimed ones. The two numbers measure different populations from the start.

What makes Owned Views higher?

There are four reasons, two from YouTube's definition and two from how the files are summed:

ReasonWhat happensSource
UGC viewsContent ID claims videos others uploaded to their channels; their views enter Owned Views but never show in your channel's StudioYouTube's content_type field
Track policyViews counted with no ads and no revenueThe Owned Views definition
Repeated filesThe same video and asset in the ads, Premium and adjustments filesOur experience
Claim-level adjustmentsIn ADJ_claim_raw the same playback repeats once per claiming assetOur experience

According to the YouTube reports Injaz Digital has received up to October 2026, in April alone about 64 million views in the claims file sat on lines with zero revenue. In July, summing ADJ_claim_raw views inflated that component by about 12%, because one playback is listed once per asset. Anyone who sums the whole views column in Excel adds all of this to the number.

How do you count the right views on a revenue statement?

You count them by taking views only from lines that carry their own revenue, once per video, channel and asset. This is the rule Injaz Digital applies:

  1. Take ads-file and Premium-file views only from lines with their own revenue.
  2. Merge the ads line and the Premium line for the same video and asset into one line, without summing their views twice.
  3. Take no views from ADJ_claim_raw. If you need view adjustments, take them from ADJ_video_raw.
  4. Leave paid features with no views; their report has no views column.
  5. Reconcile the final total with the sum of admitted views from the files before issuing the statement.

With this rule, Injaz Digital's July 2026 statement views matched the sum of admitted views from YouTube's files to the last view, with no difference. That is what makes the views on every channel's statement a number you can defend to the rights holder.

Which number should you trust: Studio or the revenue report?

Each answers its own question: YouTube Studio for your channel's performance and audience, the revenue report for what actually earned and from where. For money specifically, YouTube Help says final figures in the financial reports may differ from Analytics estimates, so the reference is the final report, not the estimate.

If your channel is in a network, ask for your statement to separate ad views from Premium and to state which views come from UGC on other channels. Injaz Digital's statements do this for every channel.

FAQ

Why are revenue report views higher than YouTube Studio?

Because Owned Views include UGC views on other channels and Track-policy views that earn nothing, and they can double when summed across files.

Should I add ADJ_claim_raw views to the ads file?

No. The same playback repeats once per claiming asset, and summing it inflated the component by about 12% in July 2026. Take view adjustments from ADJ_video_raw if you need them.

What does the Track policy mean in the report?

That the video is tracked and counted in statistics with no ads and no revenue. Its views are part of Owned Views but earn nothing.

Do paid features carry views?

No. The paid features report lists channel, video and purchase type, with no views column.
