What is an MCN, and does your channel need a management company?

An MCN connecting several YouTube channels

The short answer

An MCN (multi-channel network) is a third-party provider affiliated with several YouTube channels, offering services such as audience development, content programming, creator collaborations, digital rights management, monetization and sales. YouTube endorses no network and says plainly you do not need one to succeed. Your channel needs one only if the services in the contract are worth the share it takes.

Many channel owners get a message from a network offering to “add the channel”, and ask: “What does MCN mean?” and “Do I have to join a network to earn?” This article answers from YouTube's own help pages, not from network sales pitches.

What exactly is an MCN?

An MCN, according to YouTube Help, is a third-party service provider affiliated with several YouTube channels at once. Its channels must be reviewed and follow the monetization policies like any other channel. A network may offer one or more of these services:

  • Audience development and channel growth.
  • Content programming and planning.
  • Collaborations between creators.
  • Digital rights management, including protection from re-uploads.
  • Monetization.
  • Sales and sponsorships.

What is the difference between an affiliate and an owned channel?

YouTube distinguishes two types of channel inside a network: an affiliate channel, owned by its creator and managed by the network, and an owned and operated channel that the network runs itself.

Who owns the channelThe creator; the network manages it in an Affiliate Content Owner. The partner, which holds exclusive rights to the content.
Who uploadsUsually the creator. The partner, which runs daily operations.
Who it suitsIndependent creators who want specific services.Organisations that produce and fully own the content.

What changes in your earnings if you join a network?

Joining an MCN does not change your share from YouTube, but it changes the path your revenue takes: it flows through the network's account, and the network takes its cut before paying you. Four facts from YouTube Help:

  • Your revenue flows through the network's AdSense for YouTube account, not yours.
  • Your revenue share with YouTube stays as set in the Terms of Service.
  • Networks typically take a percentage of the creator's share before paying out.
  • The network can see the revenue data in your channel analytics.

YouTube publishes no “typical” network cut. Any figure you hear is a commercial offer that belongs in the contract.

What can a network not do?

An MCN cannot prevent copyright strikes or Community Guidelines strikes, and it carries no YouTube endorsement. A channel that breaks the rules gets the same penalty whether it is in a network or not.

  • YouTube and Google do not endorse any MCN or third-party provider.
  • YouTube Certified courses are not an endorsement: YouTube does not endorse those who complete them and no longer issues badges.
  • A network that breaks YouTube's required practices, such as misleading recruitment, may lose account features and monetization.

Does your channel need a management company?

Your channel does not need a management company to succeed on YouTube, but a partner helps when it gives you a service you cannot reach alone, most often rights protection through Content ID.

How do you leave a network?

An affiliate creator can request removal of the network's access from YouTube Studio; the network has 30 days to respond, and its access is then removed automatically within 30 days or less.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. On the Channel dashboard find the Network relationship card.
  3. Click Remove access.
  4. Confirm by clicking Leave network.
  5. After leaving, set up monetization and link an AdSense for YouTube account to keep getting paid.

If the contract has not expired, removing access may not release you from your legal obligations and may put you in breach. Check the contract first, and ask your own lawyer if unsure.

What about Quran and nasheed channels?

What recitation and nasheed channels most need from a YouTube partner is protection of their recordings from re-uploads, not growth services. The Quran text belongs to no one, but a recording whose exclusive rights you hold can be added to Content ID, so YouTube compares every new upload with it and applies your choice: monetize for you, track views, or block. So ask any network before joining: will you add my recordings to Content ID, and in whose name?

This is the standard Injaz Digital has worked to for 15+ years: an official YouTube partnership, Content ID protection and clear reports for every channel, across partner channels with 4.1B+ views and 1M+ videos under our management every month.
