The Copyright Match Tool: how to find and remove full copies of your videos

The Copyright Match Tool showing copies of a YouTube video

The short answer

The Copyright Match Tool is a YouTube Studio feature that finds full or nearly full copies of your videos on other channels, provided you uploaded them first. It is available to any channel that has submitted a valid removal request and to Partner Program channels, under Content detection. Each match has three options: contact the channel, request removal, or archive.

When channel owners see their videos on other channels, they ask: “How do I find out who copied my videos?” and “Where is the match tool?” This guide explains the tool as YouTube Help describes it today, with the button names in the Arabic interface.

What is the Copyright Match Tool?

The Copyright Match Tool is YouTube's automatic matching system that finds videos on other channels that match, or may match, yours. It uses the same matching technology as Content ID but is easier to manage and needs fewer resources. A match is not proof of infringement; reviewing each one is your responsibility.

Who can use the tool?

According to YouTube Help, the Copyright Match Tool is available to two groups of channels:

  • Any channel that has submitted a valid copyright removal request, or the copyright management tools form. Once the request is approved, scanning begins for copies of the videos in it.
  • YouTube Partner Program channels, which find the tool on the Copyright page in YouTube Studio.

For those who remove content often and have filed many valid requests, YouTube offers a broader Enterprise Copyright Match Tool that combines automatic matching with search and allows removal requests for many videos at once.

What does the tool find, and what does it miss?

The Copyright Match Tool finds full or nearly full copies of your public videos uploaded after yours, and does not scan the following cases:

CaseDoes it appear?Alternative
A full copy uploaded after yoursYes—
A short clip taken from your videoMay not appearA manual removal request
A video you were not first to uploadNoProve ownership through a removal request
A video already in Content ID or with a claimNoContent ID itself
A copy using only part of your song or audioNoA manual removal request

After a successful removal request for a video that used your song or audio, the tool may surface other videos with possibly matching audio, even if it was replaced or dubbed.

How do you reach your matches?

You reach your matches from Content detection in YouTube Studio, and you also get notifications on your channel page when new matches are found.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and choose Content detection.
  2. Open the Matches tab.
  3. Sort matches by Total views or Subscribers to start with the most widespread.
  4. For potential matches open Removal requests, then Find matches, then View matches.

What do you do with each match?

Each match in the Copyright Match Tool has three options: contact the channel, request removal, or archive, and you do not have to act on every one:

OptionWhat happensWhen it fits
Contact channelA pre-written email goes to the uploader; past emails are in the Messages tab. When you think the uploader shared it in good faith.
Request removalThe removal request form opens; the request appears in the Removal requests tab. When the copy clearly infringes.
ArchiveThe match leaves the tab and the matching video is unaffected. When the use is licensed, fair, or does not matter to you.

The match path: from first upload to your decision.

When you request removal you can schedule it to take effect in 7 days, so the uploader can delete the video and avoid a strike.

How do you stop copies before they are uploaded?

You can stop future copies by turning on Prevent copies when you submit a removal request in Studio. The feature uses the same matching technology and scans public videos only; anything it does not block because it is not an exact copy may show up as a potential match.

What could get you into trouble?

YouTube knows only who uploaded a video first, not who owns it or has permission to upload it, so the responsibility is yours before any request. A re-upload can be legitimate under fair use, public domain or a licence. Misusing the tool, such as repeated abusive removal requests or trying to probe the matching system, can lead to losing the feature or to account or partnership termination.

Copyright Match Tool or Content ID?

The difference is that the Copyright Match Tool shows full copies for you to decide on manually, while Content ID applies your decision automatically to every matching upload and lets you earn from copies.

FAQ

Do I have to act on every match?

No. You do not have to act on every match, and you can archive the ones that do not matter to you. Each match appears only once.

Does archiving delete the copy?

No. Archiving only removes the match from the Matches tab; the matching video stays as it is, and the match moves to the Archive tab.

Why do I see no matches for a video I know was copied?

You may not have been the first to upload it to YouTube, it may be in Content ID or have a claim, or the copy is a short clip rather than a full copy.

Is every match an infringement?

No. A match is not proof of infringement. Review each case and consider fair use or a licence before requesting removal.
