The short answer
To appear in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answers, these engines' crawlers must reach your site and find pages that answer your customers' questions clearly. Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and make sure your pages are indexed in Google and eligible to show with a snippet. Google says its AI features need no special optimisation and no new files.
Business owners now ask: “how do I get my company to show up in ChatGPT?” and “why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?” The answer starts with two simple technical questions: can the engine read your site, and does it find an answer there worth quoting?
How do AI engines choose their sources?
When these engines search the web, each relies on its own crawler, and none can quote a page its crawler cannot reach. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build the answer.
What does each engine require?
Each engine has a search crawler and a separate training setting; this is what their official documentation says:
| Engine | What it needs to show you | Training control |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and OpenAI's published IP ranges | GPTBot, independent of search |
| Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode | A page indexed in Google and eligible for a snippet | Google-Extended, which does not affect Google Search |
| Perplexity | Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt | PerplexityBot is not used for model training |
How do you make your site eligible to appear?
Appearing in AI answers takes six steps, three technical and three about content:
- Open robots.txt and allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. OpenAI and Perplexity say a change can take about 24 hours to apply.
- Make sure your firewall or CDN does not block the crawlers; OpenAI recommends allowing its published IP ranges, and Perplexity publishes its list too.
- Check in Search Console that your key pages are indexed and carry no nosnippet or noindex, since Google requires a page to be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- Write pages that answer your customers' questions, with the direct answer at the top.
- Add sources, numbers and attributed quotes; in the GEO study published at KDD 2024 these methods raised content visibility in answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help.
- Make clear who wrote the content, how and why; Google says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T.
Do you need an llms.txt file or special structured data?
You do not need them to appear in Google's features. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and no special schema.org structured data. Google does not name llms.txt, but it is this kind of file. OpenAI's and Perplexity's crawler documentation does not list llms.txt as a requirement either; what they ask is that you allow their crawlers.
Does blocking training stop you appearing in answers?
No, if you block the right crawler. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot for search while disallowing GPTBot from using your content for training. Google says Google-Extended does not affect your inclusion or ranking in Google Search, but it governs use of your content for Gemini training and for grounding, meaning content from the Google Search index given to the model at prompt time. Blocking it may therefore reduce use of your content in Gemini answers.
The most common mistake: blocking every AI crawler with one rule, so the site disappears from ChatGPT and Perplexity search when the goal was only to stop training.
How do you write content AI will quote?
Content that AI quotes is written for people first, with a clear answer and a known source. Google says its systems favour content made to help people, not to manipulate rankings, and suggests three questions for every page: who made it, how and why, calling “why” perhaps the most important. In the GEO paper, quotations, statistics and citations raised visibility by up to 40%. In practice: a direct answer at the top, question headings, a table for comparisons, every number with its source, the author's name and a last-updated date.
How do you measure your visibility in AI answers?
The clearest official measure available is Search Console: Google says traffic from AI features is included in overall search traffic there. Beyond that, the simplest test is to ask the engines the questions your customers ask and see whether your company is named and your site linked.
Injaz AI by Injaz Digital applied these standards to Injaz Digital's own site first, then brought them to clients: content that fully answers the question, trusted sources, consistent presence beyond the site, and regular measurement of results.
FAQ
Do I need llms.txt to appear in Google?
No. Google says appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode needs no AI text files or special markup, and llms.txt is that kind of file.
If I block GPTBot, do I disappear from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is for training; appearing in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, and each setting is independent.
How long does a robots.txt change take to apply?
About 24 hours according to OpenAI, and up to 24 hours according to Perplexity.
Does allowing the crawlers guarantee my company appears?
No. Access is a condition, not a guarantee; being quoted depends on page quality, a clear answer and relevance to the question.
